Dryer Repair in Springfield, VA

A dryer that stops heating or takes multiple cycles to dry clothes can quickly become more than an inconvenience. Alliance Appliance Services diagnoses and repairs gas and electric dryers throughout Springfield and across Virginia, Maryland and Washington, DC.

We look at the whole drying system, heat, airflow, drum and controls, because a dryer that runs long is as often an airflow problem as a heating problem. You get a clear diagnosis and an upfront estimate before any work starts.

Tell us the appliance, the brand and what it’s doing. We’ll diagnose first and explain the repair before any work starts.

01 / Problems we fix

Common dryer problems we repair.

Most dryer faults come down to heat, airflow or the drive system. Here is what each symptom usually means.

  • Dryer Not Heating

A dryer that tumbles but produces no heat usually has a failed heating element (electric), a weak igniter, gas valve coils or flame sensor (gas), a blown thermal fuse or a bad thermostat. A blown thermal fuse is also a warning that airflow is restricted.

    • Drum turns, clothes stay cold
    • Dryer heats briefly then goes cold
    • Only one of two breakers tripped (electric)
  • Dryer Won’t Start

No response when you press start can involve the door switch, the start switch, the thermal fuse, the motor or the control board. On many dryers a blown thermal fuse stops the dryer from starting at all.

  • Dryer Not Tumbling

If the dryer hums or heats but the drum doesn’t turn, the drive belt has usually snapped or the idler pulley, drum rollers or motor have failed. We also check for objects caught between the drum and the cabinet.

  • Dryer Takes Too Long to Dry

Long drying times are the most misdiagnosed dryer problem. Lint build-up in the vent, a crushed or kinked vent hose, a blocked exterior flap or a clogged blower wheel can double drying time even though the heater is fine. We check airflow before replacing heating parts.

    • Two cycles to dry a normal load
    • Top of the dryer hot to the touch
    • Lint at the exterior vent or a burning smell
  • Dryer Making Squeaking or Grinding Noises

Squealing points to worn drum rollers, a glazed idler pulley or a dry rear drum bearing. Grinding or thumping often means a damaged roller, a worn drum glide or a foreign object. These parts wear together, so we usually recommend replacing them as a set.

  • Dryer Overheating

A dryer that scorches clothes or shuts off from heat has a cycling or high-limit thermostat problem, a stuck heating relay or, very often, restricted airflow. Overheating is a fire risk and should be looked at promptly.

  • Dryer Shuts Off During Cycle

A dryer that stops a few minutes into the cycle may have an overheating motor, a faulty moisture sensor, a failing door switch or a control fault. If it restarts after cooling down, the motor or the airflow is the likely cause.

02 / In detail

Gas Dryer Repair

Gas dryers use an igniter, a flame sensor and gas valve coils to produce heat. When the coils weaken, the dryer heats for a few minutes and then goes cold, a very common gas-dryer fault. We service natural gas and propane dryers.

If you ever smell gas, leave the area and contact your gas utility before calling us.

Electric Dryer Repair

Electric dryers run on a 240-volt circuit with two breakers. If only one trips, the drum will turn but the dryer won’t heat. Beyond that, the heating element, thermal fuse, thermostats and the heating relay on the control board are the usual electric-dryer repairs.

Dryer Repair vs. Replacement

Dryers are mechanically simple and most repairs, elements, igniters, fuses, rollers and belts, are modest. A dryer with a failed motor or a damaged drum on an older machine is the exception, and we will give you our honest view after the diagnosis.

  • Age of the appliance

An older appliance approaching the end of its typical useful life may not justify an expensive repair.

  • Repair cost

Compare the expected repair expense with the cost of purchasing and installing a comparable replacement.

  • Overall condition

An appliance that has otherwise been dependable may be an excellent repair candidate.

  • Previous repairs

Repeated failures can change the economics of another repair.

  • Replacement cost

Premium refrigerators, ranges and other high-end appliances can be expensive to replace, making repair particularly worthwhile in some situations.

Our $75 diagnostic fee covers the technician coming out to check the issue, and it is applied toward the repair if you go ahead.

How soon can I get dryer repair in Springfield?

It depends on the day and the route. Call (571) 303-8548 and we'll give you the earliest opening in Springfield.

My dryer runs but doesn’t heat. What is wrong?

On an electric dryer, check that both breakers are on. Beyond that it is usually the heating element, thermal fuse or a thermostat. On a gas dryer it is often the igniter or the gas valve coils. The technician tests each before replacing anything.

Why does my dryer take two cycles to dry?

Most often the vent is restricted. Lint in the duct, a crushed hose behind the dryer or a stuck exterior flap all slow drying. We check airflow first, because a new heating element will not fix a blocked vent.

Is a squeaking dryer safe to use?

It is usually a worn roller, pulley or bearing. It is not dangerous in itself, but the parts wear quickly once they start to squeal and can damage the drum, so have it looked at soon.

Do you repair gas dryers?

Yes, natural gas and propane. If you smell gas, leave the home and call your gas utility first.

How much does dryer repair cost?

It depends on the appliance, the problem and the parts required. Our $75 diagnostic fee covers the technician coming out to check the issue, and it is applied toward the repair if you go ahead. You receive the estimate before any approved work starts.
